Raw Denim Jeans.
Here's the skinny:
Denim, untreated and unwashed in anyway. Those whispers you pay so much money for? Don't exist on these bad boys.
You buy them a size too small (my first pair couldn't zip all the way up when I first bought them)
You wear them, everyday, for months on end.
You NEVER wash them.
Eventually, you will have a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly. Also, each whisper or line in the pants belongs to you alone, your body did that.

I thought it would be fun to do a series of posts on my work clothes. I don't have a lot of extra money, so when I do go clothes-shopping, I usually end up buying work clothes because it is more important to me to look nice at work than to look good (not that I don't) doing other activities.

So a roommate of mine and myself went grocery shopping at the local Fred Meyer. It was news to me that Fred Meyer not only carries your everyday groceries, but also home decor, clothes, shoes, well really I think they carry everything in the world. Distracted by the non-perishable part of the store, I wondered aimlessly from section to gleaming section. I happened to be in the "teenage angst and rebel section complete with bedazzled bum pockets and camouflage shorts" when I found a priceless gem: a hoodie buddie.
What is this hoodie buddie I speak of? let me explain: a hoodie buddie is nothing less than a zip-up hoodie with earbuds attached through the shoe strings that poke out through either side of the hood. not just any earbuds. They are incorporated in the jacket, and end in a special pocket specifically designed to place an iPod. (advertised as an mp3, but let's be honest with ourselves, if you don't own an iPod you don't own a life.) I was sorely tempted to buy a buddie to take home with me, and I carted the darn thing through the entire store trying to decide if it was worth it. I ended up putting it back, but I think about it daily.

Swimwear. The possibilities are endless.

Time to Tailor

As many of you are no doubt aware, I like to do a little sewing from time to time. I did this one a few months ago. As you can tell from my pasty white skin, I was indoors studying a lot at the time, and this was a good way for me to unwind from school. This was the most involved project that I had attempted to date, and I was very proud of the results.

I like to troll the thrift stores wherever I am to look for bargains, from time to time these bargains include a nice suit. Usually I just taper the pants a little and I am good to go, if the jacket is too big I just leave it for another lankier (or thicker as the case may be with different suits) guy to find and utilize. For this suit though it was in such great condition and it was such a good price ($15 for a three piece suit) I talked myself into attempting a riskier job. I was going to shorten the bottom of the jacket by three to four inches.

As you can see below, this suit was much to long for me. I am not sure what kind of string bean was wearing this before me, but dang.
The first thing that I had to do was unpick the lining and figure out where I was going to put the seam that would curve around the bottom of the jacket up to the buttons. This is the most visible part of the project so I was a little worried. You can see below where I marked from a template that I copied off another jacket and inked it on there and then pinned it. What you cannot see is that it took me about three or four tries sewing and unpicking til I finally had it right. The other side only took me two tries though, so I did improve on this project.
The next step was difficult as well, mostly because you can change a seam, but you cannot unpick something that you have cut off. In order to get the corner right on this jacket I needed to make sure that the seam would lay flat once I cut off the excess material, but I could not do that until I started cutting, catch 22. I finally bit the bullet and did my best, and it turned out, after a little tweaking. Below you can see that first seam finished and cut.

I was pretty proud of that corner, I really think that I did a good job and people seem surprised when I tell them that I did it myself. Surprised in a good way. After the corner I just needed to cut off all the excess along the bottom of the jacket, press the cuff part (that is one of the trickiest parts of tailoring I think, how much pressing the fabric comes into play in making the garment look right, I have actually considered getting some tailors tools that you use just for pressing stuff and shaping fabric) and then sew it up. I sewed all of the bottom part of the jacket, the lining and the back corners by the vents by hand. It actually did not take too long and was really good practice. Plus, on something as visible as the bottom of a jacket I did not want to risk the blind hem.

Here is the jacket when I had finished one side. This is good to see how much I had cut off as well as to compare my work with the original tailoring of the jacket. If I do say so myself, I did a pretty good job, especially for a rookie.

I thought I took some after pictures without my hands in the pocket, but I do not know where they are and do not want to look through a bunch of folders tonight for a picture that may or may not be there, so here is one that I did find. This was really a picture to show a cool tie and shirt that I got at Goodwill, but it will do. This was actually a really fun project. I got to try some stuff that I had never done before and my confidence is a lot higher with sewing now. I know that I can just be careful and unpick if it does not work out. Next project? I am currently tapering about five pairs of pants that I got on my run of D.I.s that I made when I went from L.A. to S.L.C. I went D.I.s in Las Vegas, St. George, Cedar City, Provo, Midvale, and Salt Lake, not to mention a few Saver's on the way and some Goodwills in California. It is the summer of thrift for sure. An "A" for Style

Whoever said that $25 can't look like a million bucks, they ain't got nuthin' on me. This is what I wore to my oral argument (I did not wear the sweater when I was speaking though). All I did to the suit was taper the legs and a little blind hem. I think it turned out pretty well. I am going to try to fit the jacket a little better around the waist, but I only have so much time.
I thought I would try out a new style on the pocket square, this method is called the "shell". Pretty nifty, Fred Astaire would be proud.
This is a little idea I had the other day. I want to try out the off-color vest with the suit. I also have a gray suit that I can wear with a blue vest. I think it looks OK, but not great. Back to the drawing board I guess.
Last thing for this post. Closeup on my fine handiwork on the pants. Also, I got these shoes at D.I. for $12, they are a brand called Florisheim, they are super nice shoes. The weird part is that Lance was showing off the new wing-tips that he got at D.I. to me, and I found these like a day later. Brothers to the bone I guess.

It really is me, Mom found someone to shorten the jacket, I tapered the pants myself with a little help from Mom on the waist. Guess who learned to sew a blind hem? Me!!!!! Takes the total cost of the suit to like $25, because Mike gave it to me. Not to mention the three or four hours I spent sewing of course. Eat your hearts out. I also sewed some pockets squares, and since they were around, Lance and Trent got some too. Next on the the docket: skinn-fying my own jeans and a linen pocket square. Look out!

Today is Nikki's birthday, and as she has dedicated a birthday post to every other sibling, she deserves her own.
First of all, the fashionably part of the post. A five old Nicole is wearing a raggedy ann dress made by my mom. Its hard to tell from the photo, but the dress is tiered, and Nikki loved it so much that Mom made a matching one for her doll.
Now, the birthday post part. Nikki is the first child in our family, our oldest sister. She is perhaps the best sibling to be the oldest because she is brave and creative and not afraid to try things no one else has. She up and moved to the distant Chicago for art school after college, she was not just the first snowboarder in our family, but one of the first ever girl snowboarders, and she started the Harrison migration trend to Portland. She lives there now with Craig and Naomi, in a yellow house, and she is a graphic designer for Bullseye glass. She is also getting her masters degree, a technology focused MBA. If that isn't enough to prove her awesomeness, she rides an xtracycle and has impeccable, yet original, taste in clothes, food and music.
I love Nicole because she introduced me to a little thing called a fixie, and she makes me believe I can do anything I want to. When I grow up I want to be just like her. happy birthday Nikki!

Well, I've done it! I created this jacket from scratch with no real pattern, and then I WORE it! (since you have to wear the things that get posted here.) I wore it to a little show, the fossil fools, at a pizza place, and I actually got some compliments on it from people whose fashion I admire. I am pretty proud ( pretty and proud) This is made out of thick jersey, and it was inspired by Leanne, season 5 of Project Runway. I had a little bit of a rough time with sewing the button hole, but, as I sewed it very inconspicuously, it is no matter. The button and hole are hidden and cannot be seen whether the jacket is open or closed. Thanks mom for the over-the-phone help!

I got these new kicks for only 30 bones, they are a little sleeker than most of mine and I should be able to wear them with shorts, which is the other reason I got them. I also love the color, they almost exactly match one of my nylon belts from Gen X too, priceless.

The other point of this point (there are actually two more points) is first, to show off some of my hemming skills, Renee, the machine is working great, thanks again for the loaner. Secondly, I am trying out a new style I like to call "Lance Style". See, Lance is so skinny, even the skinniest jeans are not tight on him, but I like it, see. So these are like borderline, they actually touch my leg on the calf, but they have a little wrinkle, just the way Lancer likes 'em, and me too. Anyway, more sewing stuff to follow eventually.

Before you chime in on how over the top it is, let me give you a few key pieces of information. Then I'll submit to your judgments.

He is very patriotic, look how happy he is wearing it!
We did not purchase this outfit, it was a gift. (However, I do have to take the responsibility for gleefully dressing him in it.)
Mom gave him those shorts, so don't say anything bad about those.
Finally (and worth the most points) we opted out of dressing him in the coordinating pants (see below.) Who designs baby clothes? Writing on the bum?? Really??

several things about this outfit.
first, i always get loads (can you tell i've been reading harry potter?) of compliments on these boots, (a lot of people think they are vans, when in fact they are pumas) including this one: brooke, if any other girl wore that outfit-i'd punch her in the face. but with you not only does it work, i like it. (thanks?) that just reiterates that people feel like they can say whatever they want to me (my seminary teacher calls me a lesbian in front of the whole class all the time.)
second, these socks are actually kendra's who lent them to me, and the dog chewed through the toes so she gave them to me. they've graced this blog before.
and third, nicole-i believe you own this sweater-thing. mom told me the horror story. if we only talked more, you would know that i had to buy it a size too big.

I wore this to church today, I got this stuff from a variety of sources. Mom got me these shoes in the ninth grade and this jacket when I was 18 (she thought it was about time I wore a jacket to church). Dal gave me these sweet pants, and the sweater(vest) I got at H&M. I am usually loathe to mix patterns/textures, but I kind of like the tweed jacket and pinstriped pants, let me know what you think.

The snaps on the pants are not only stylish, but also functional. Sadly, the shoes are NOT quite as functional-Harrison remains a mostly supine baby.

I've been rockin Dickies since high school, about a decade now, wow. They get me to that point just before classy. You look good, but you can still fight off a bum in a dumpster if you had to. Ya dig. Thanks for the hat mom, and a guy at school said it takes a real man to wear pink, I think it was a compliment.

A little sunshine on a blustery day

Not only is this a sick herringbone suit, but Mom and I made it this way. This was just a normal D.I. suit, flat fronted pants. With Mom's sewing prowess and a little of my elbow grease (which is almost impossible to get out of wool by the way) we took these pants in like 1 1/2-2 inches in the legs. I wish I had a before picture so you knew how good these turned out. Thanks Mom! Now I have two sweet suits that are a little more European with the slim pants.
This is also a new shirt, the sleeves are a great fit, as you can see. What you can't see is that this is a fitted, wrinkle free shirt, and it only cost me $9.99 at Ross. Killer.

I know what you're thinking, "but Matt, haven't we already seen this outfit?". Yes, and no. I decided to switch it up a little, with this!That's right, I wore a tie to school today. I really like this look, stay tuned for the tie with skinny jeans. Also, I am thinking about rockin' a vest.

I Got a "you must be an art student" type of look today, so this oufit must be good.

I've never really worn this jacket closed before, I like it. I tried a fashion face for Lance. I don't know what look I like better, this one, or the one that looks like I wet my pants.

Although you've grown accustomed to seeing Matt grace the posts on this blog, the youngest and freshest Harrison is now making his debut in his Sunday best. He also likes to dress things down a bit by hiking up one pant leg - which allows him to show some skin as well as regulate his body temperature on these warm California days. He's still trying to master his facial expression, if only Tracy could give him some pointers?!

For my first post ever I wanted to do a little fashion instruction for all y'alls benefit. I'm using two willing participants in the fam. First the do not: do not wet yourself and then let your brother take a picture of you, big fashion no-no. Second: I want everyone to study this photo, because this is the epitome of the fashion face which we all need to learn if we want to go anywhere in the fashion world, tracy can answer any specific questions you have.

Now that the instruction is done, this is just my Sunday best and a shout-out to Matt for the jacket. I'm still working on the whole fashion face, but it'll improve, along with the rest of yours I hope, in the near future.

This suit is one that I got from D.I., sometimes you just get lucky. The sweet trench coat down below Mom found for me, and it got rave reviews in church last week. The picture below is me trying out new poses, thanks Brooke.

p.s. For any of you Seinfeld fans out there, this is the "executive" model of trench coat.
